Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS)

Wirraka Maya’s Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program supports individuals, families and communities to reduce smoking and vaping and build healthier, smoke‑free futures. We recognise that smoking is influenced by many factors, including stress, trauma, social pressures and environment, and our approach is respectful, supportive and non‑judgemental.

Through education, early intervention and ongoing support, the TIS program works to reduce the impact of smoking‑related illness and support people to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing.

Tackling Indigenous Smoking at Wirraka Maya focuses on prevention, education and long‑term behaviour change, with a strong emphasis on working with children, young people and families. Our team delivers culturally appropriate education that supports people to understand the risks of smoking and vaping, and the benefits of not starting or of quitting early.

A key part of this work is delivered in partnership with Yaandina, where Wirraka Maya has supported joint education and wellbeing sessions reaching hundreds of school‑aged students. These sessions focus on the dangers of smoking and vaping, building awareness early and supporting healthier choices for the next generation.

Need help giving up the smokes?

For people who are ready to quit or cut back, the TIS program provides personalised, practical support. This may include:

  • Clear information about smoking, vaping and quitting options
  • One‑on‑one yarns with trained workers about quitting
  • Access to nicotine replacement therapy or other quit supports at no cost
  • Regular follow‑up and encouragement throughout the quitting journey

Support is delivered at each person’s pace, recognising that quitting can take time and may involve setbacks along the way.

Community connection is central to the TIS program. Wirraka Maya actively participates in community events, school programs and outreach activities, creating safe and familiar spaces to talk about smoking and vaping. By working alongside families, schools and partner organisations, the program helps reinforce smoke‑free messages and support healthier environments for children and young people.
