Culture Care Connect

Culture Care Connect is Wirraka Maya’s culturally safe aftercare and follow‑up support program for people experiencing suicidal thoughts or behaviours. The program provides timely, compassionate support during periods of heightened risk, helping people feel connected, supported and not alone.

Culture Care Connect recognises that healing and recovery are strengthened through connection — to culture, family, community and trusted supports. The program works alongside individuals at their own pace, offering support that respects lived experience, cultural identity and personal circumstances.

How the program supports people

Culture Care Connect provides crisis support and ongoing follow‑up care, helping people navigate challenging periods and stay connected to the supports they need. Support may include regular check‑ins, coordination with other services and warm referrals to ongoing care through Wirraka Maya or external providers.

The program has supported more than 45 individuals, with referrals coming from both Wirraka Maya staff and external agencies. Outreach has also extended beyond Hedland, including support for people in surrounding and regional communities such as Nullagine.

Culture Care Connect works closely with Wirraka Maya’s Social and Emotional Wellbeing team, clinic staff and external partners to ensure care is coordinated and responsive. This collaborative approach helps reduce gaps in support and ensures people receive care that is consistent, culturally informed and centred on their wellbeing.
