Visiting Specialists
Wirraka Maya works with a range of visiting specialist and allied health providers to support the health needs of Aboriginal people in Hedland and surrounding communities. These services strengthen our local primary health care by bringing additional expertise into the community.
Visiting specialists play an important role in improving access to care, particularly for people who would otherwise need to travel long distances away from family, community and Country. By hosting specialist clinics locally, Wirraka Maya helps reduce barriers to care and supports continuity within a culturally safe environment.
Specialist services are integrated with our primary health team, ensuring care is coordinated, well‑communicated and responsive to each person’s needs.
Visiting specialist services may include:
- Paediatric services
- Dental services
- Optometry (eye health)
- Podiatry (foot care)
- Audiology (hearing services)
- Physiotherapy
- Dietetics
- Diabetes education
Accessing visiting specialists
Access to visiting specialist services is by referral through Wirraka Maya’s clinic. Clients will first see a GP or relevant health professional, who can assess their needs and arrange referral to an appropriate visiting service.
Appointments and follow‑up care are coordinated by the clinic team, working closely with visiting providers to support smooth scheduling and continuity of care. Availability of visiting specialists may change over time to respond to community needs and service demand.
