Preventative Health

Wirraka Maya’s Preventative Health services focus on prevention, early intervention and community‑led wellbeing, supporting Aboriginal people in Hedland and surrounding areas to live healthier lives over the long term. Our work recognises that strong health outcomes are shaped not only by clinical care, but by knowledge, connection, culture and access to the right supports.

Preventative Health initiatives are delivered through health promotion, education and outreach, addressing key risk factors such as chronic disease, smoking, nutrition, physical activity and mental wellbeing. Programs are designed to be practical, culturally respectful and responsive to local priorities, supporting individuals, families and communities to make informed choices about their health.

Community engagement sits at the heart of our approach. Wirraka Maya actively participates in and hosts community events, health campaigns and information forums, creating opportunities to share health messages in welcoming, culturally grounded settings. Through events such as NAIDOC Week, Close the Gap Day, Reconciliation Week, R U OK? Day and community information sessions, our teams connect directly with community members, Elders and families in ways that build trust and strengthen relationships.
