Primary Health

Wirraka Maya delivers comprehensive primary health care for Aboriginal people living in Hedland and surrounding communities. Our services are grounded in cultural safety and community control, supporting people to access care that respects culture, identity and lived experience.

Our primary health services are delivered by a multidisciplinary team of Aboriginal Health Practitioners, GPs and nurses who work together to support physical health, wellbeing and prevention. We focus on building strong relationships with clients and families, recognising that trust and continuity are central to good health outcomes.

Our Approach to Primary Healthcare

At Wirraka Maya, primary health care is delivered through a team‑based, client‑centred model. Aboriginal Health Practitioners play a key role in supporting clients throughout their visit, helping people feel comfortable, informed and supported while navigating care.

Primary health care is closely connected with other Wirraka Maya programs, including social and emotional wellbeing, maternal and child health, chronic disease care and population health. This integrated approach allows us to respond to the whole person, not just a single health issue, and reduces the need for people to move between services on their own.

We prioritise access and continuity by coordinating follow‑up care, recalls, referrals and visiting specialist appointments. Where additional services are required, our team works with external providers and visiting clinicians to help people access the care they need while minimising barriers such as travel and cost.

To access our primary healthcare services, call the Clinic Reception on (08) 9172 0400 or visit us at 17 Hamilton Road, South Hedland during opening hours. Wirraka Maya is a bulk‑billing service for clinic‑based care.
